ONGOING FORMATION AT THE ROYAL SCOTS COLLEGE SALAMANCA

FORTHCOMING COURSES

Paul for Priests
A course for priests ordained from ten to twenty five years. 1983 -1998

Course presenter Fr. Thomas Kilbride
Wednesday 22nd – Wednesday 29th October 2008
.
The Royal Scots College, Salamanca

In this year, in which the Church is celebrating the bi-millennium of the birth of St. Paul, Priests for Scotland is offering a week of study and reflection on the New Testament letters of Paul. Taking up Pope Benedict XVI's encouragement to "make more widely known the immense wealth of the teaching they contain", priests are invited to renew their acquaintance with Paul, the pastor and preacher. Study of Paul’s theological and pastoral insights will help to make his legacy more widely known and accessible to parishioners. Fr. Thomas Kilbride, of the Archdiocese of Glasgow, lecturer in New Testament in Scotus College, will lead us in a week of reflection, discussion and prayer focusing on such topics as Paul's understanding of his ministry, vocation and mission, his core theological vision, as well as the lectionary and the challenges of preaching from Paul's letters.

This course was originally advertised for priests ordained between ten and twenty five years however requests to participate have also been received from outside this ordination group. If you would like to take part please contact the Priests for Scotland office since there are a small number of places still available.

Looking Forward in Ministry

A course for priests ordained under ten years.

Fr Paddy Sweeney, a priest of the Archdiocese of Dublin, has for the past seven years been a member of a team offering care and continuing formation to priests of his diocese. He also works as a facilitator with teams and groups .

Trained as a psychotherapist and systems consultant, he has worked with groups of priests throughout Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Ethiopia and Zambia. Paddy works part-time in the parish of the Assumption, Ballyfermot. In this course Paddy will review issues of challenge and opportunity in ministry today with particular reference to those in the early years of ordained ministry. This course will take place from Monday 12th January - Monday 19th January 2009.

Study Day on Saint Paul for Clergy

On 27 November 2008 the newly formed Catholic Biblical Federation──Scotland will host a Study Day for Clergy on St. Paul at Scotus College at Bearsden in Glasgow. Given that this is the Year of Paul, many of us will be hosting talks or trying to prepare parish activities relating to the life and thought of this seminal figure in Church history but might feel that we need a refresher. In order to help all of us prepare for this year, and at the same time accomplish one of the six days of Ongoing Education which the bishops have recently asked us to do, we propose a Study Day with the following outline.

11:00 Opening Prayer

11:15 General Session:
How did Paul Preach?─Fr. Robert Hill, Ph.D.
How do We Preach Paul?─Fr. David Cotter, S.T.D.

12:00 Workshops
Paul in the Lectionary─Fr. Jim Foley, S.S.L.
Making sense of difficult texts in Paul─Fr. David Cotter, S.T.D.
Basic Paul─Fr. Michael McMahon, S.S.L.
The Person and Ministry of Paul─Fr. Thomas Kilbride, S.S.L.

13:00 Lunch

14:00 Repetition of Morning Workshops

14:45 Feedback and Questions

15:30 Closing Prayer

In addition, Fr. Gerard Conroy, S.S.L. is preparing a handout with a brief summary of the highlights of Paul’s theology which will be made available to all who attend.
Those travelling from some distance cans spend the night before the Study Day at Scotus College. For those spending the night, Scotus asks a fee of £20 B+B.

The fee for the Study Day will be £15 (£35 for those spending the night at Scotus). Fees will be collected on the day
So that we may plan the catering and gauge the number of copies to make of materials to be handed out, we ask that those planning to attend contact Fr. David Cotter at St. Aidan’s Parish in Johnstone on (01505) 320 900 or by e-mail at dcotter01@googlemail.com by Monday, 24 November.
